The evaluation system

The mānuka honey authentication test includes five attributes: three chemical markers derived from the nectar and a DNA marker from mānuka pollen.

1. MGO for power
   Methylglyoxal (MGO) is the source of golden mānuka honey's unique antibacterial properties and is an important indicator of its potency. The higher the MGO value, the higher the concentration of this compound.
2. Leptosperin for authenticity
   Leptosperin is a compound found only in mānuka flower nectar and can only be created by nature. Measuring this unique component allows us to guarantee the authenticity of mānuka honey. Laboratory research also shows that leptosperin has anti-inflammatory properties, which increase with the increase in the UMF™ scale.
3. DHA for preservation
   Dihydroxyacetone (as we call it) is slowly converted into MGO in healthy, live honey. The higher the DHA content, the longer the MGO content in your mānuka honey will last—that's why the best mānuka honey must contain more than 70 mg/kg of DHA to be UMF™ certified.
4. HMF for freshness
   We check for the presence of hydroxymethylfurfural, a complex compound that ensures the honey has not been overheated or stored for too long, and is therefore in optimal conditions to maintain its unique vital properties, as promised by your trusted supplier.
